I live close to the North York Moors. I breathe the moors. The pastel reflects the visual intersections of this particular landscape which has been cleared, changed, developed, used again and again over time to create rich tapestry of field patterns, boundary walls, divisions and separations that are both fascinating and a creative inspiration to engage with.

Soft pastel on Canson 180gsm 1557 drawing paper

Last light catches the shapes, patterns and forms in the North Yorkshire hillside. The valleys are deep, shadows are long. Undulating glacial contours intersected by roads, tracks, paths and more have had many uses over time. This richly layered pastel painting to both draw and paint with the media (with masking, fixative, water, rubbing alcohol with both brush and by hand) gives a truly tactile feel and expression to the landscape balancing freedom of expression with control.
