This painting is the first of an ongoing series of tree portraits. Working directly from observation, I am drawn to the individuality and presence of mature trees, approaching them as figures rather than landscape motifs. Gesture, structure and rhythm are used to suggest movement within stillness, allowing each tree to assert its own character.
