"I dream of a time when clouds of butterflies take flight once again, when the air is alive with their dancing rhythms as my grandfather saw" Each butterfly is lifesize, hand drawn from observation, the mobile inspired by the Small White butterflies seen spinning and dancing above the brassica through the summer. In 2024 even this "pest" butterfly has been scarce, a further reminder of the damage we are causing. My grandfather is no longer here to chronicle how nature was plentiful, we must find other ways to tell the stories. Not suitable for children.

Graphite

h: 61 w: 23 d: 1 (cms).

Papilio machaon A rare British Butterfly, this Swallowtail visitor to Rye Harbour is likely to be the migrant subspecies "gorganus" rather than "britannicus" which is now restricted to the Norfolk Broads, where it lays its eggs on Milk Parsley (Peucedanum palustre) plants. "Gorganus" will seek out Wild Carrot (Daucus carota) as an alternative foodplant for the growing larvae.
