In this tondo, the sitter is depicted from above, emerging from/ disappearing into an illusory emptiness made of emotive lines created by the artist by sanding the paper; these marks contribute to make the drawing surface more textured and uneven, and to give a general movement to the composition. Depicting her sitter naked is a choice the artist makes to highlight her vulnerability. The sitter’s hands are crossed in a sort of a hug, a physical embrace, that inspires the title of the drawing. “Embrace” has been chosen for its double meaning; the sitter is actually holding herself, looking for comfort and safety, and at the same time she is accepting herself, trying to understand her dark emotions that seem to surround her in this circular-shaped composition.

In this self portrait, the artist represents herself lying down, partially covering her face with her hand. The fact that her presence is actually filling just half of the composition, leaving the other half almost empty, has a metaphorical meaning, as does the vortex of dark marks that the artist creates sanding the paper and filling them with charcoal powder: the sitter is slowly losing herself, abandoning her needs, her boundaries and her identity, to merge with another person to become what this person is expecting her to be. So even if the image could be interpreted as a tender picture of someone sleeping, it hides a much bitter truth: what we see on paper is what is left of her, a blurry image, a body abandoned in a state of unconsciousness, while her true self is slowly fading away.
