I walk through this clematis on the dunes on the way to my sea swim. I drew it en plein air but added my imagination later. The mythology of the plant fascinates me and it was said that Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus sheltered under its bower during their flight into Egypt. My drawing shows Lelant’s St Uny Church and the pyramidal structure of Knill’s monument a local landmark, with palm trees which thrive here in Cornwall.

I started this drawing at Godolphin in the Medieval walled gardens. I was later fascinated to learn that in a medieval garden scene, the teasel may symbolize the toil and tribulation that came into the world after the Fall of Man
