I re-appropriated the masking overlay from a previous work, with its remaining paint marks, to position into an altered representation of an original image. This was gratifying as I felt it was more reflective of my original concept. I was given a collection of miniature bottles, most unused, after an exhibition of my eclectic hoardings including bottle tops and pencil shavings. The bottles were put into a fish tank and drawn direct from observation. They remain unopened as I'm tea total. The drawing challenged me to look at for reflections, distortions, patterns and many other elements that make up liquid in a glass.

'The Garden and the Gate is a freehand papercut, drawn with a scalpel. The piece is constructed from a collage of drawings, but these were used for reference in the cutting process rather than to trace through. The improvised mark making is important in giving the artwork an energy and spontaneous feeling. The artwork explores the positive impact that immigration has had on the development of English culture and identity. The initial starting point was the myth of giants arriving in the land of Albion and physically shaping the environment and creating an initial identity for the land. The image of a green and pleasant garden and the fairy tale setting provide the opportunity to explore and reflect on the tensions around national identity and power dynamics. The complexity and intricacy within the image explore the interwoven and dense structure of a diverse and ancient society.

Over a period of time, I gathered the heads of flowers, mostly roses, that I was gifted or grew myself and dried them. I stored them in this old glass vase on a windowsill, intending to weave some sort of curtain in an exhibition I had planned. After almost a year, it occurred to me that they formed a beautiful, faded display of their own and that, in combination with the directional light and reflections, were in fact a work of art. It was a challenge to represent the inside and outside of the clear glass tube. Add to this the textures of the dried petals and it proved to be a painting I was happy to finish.

I was gifted this Japanese style teapot by a sister following her travels. She knows how much I enjoy all things Japanese and felt I might be tempted to use it in a still life painting at some stage. What she could not have known was that the teapot arrived at exactly the same time as the cherry blossoms and was the same colour too. I made it my mission to use as little colour as possible to rise to the challenge of a white painting on a black background. The final outcome meant that the greens looked heightened and much more vibrant, which I had not anticipated. It is presented in a vintage oval frame which compliments the overall composition.

Last light catches the shapes, patterns and forms in the North Yorkshire hillside. The valleys are deep, shadows are long. Undulating glacial contours intersected by roads, tracks, paths and more have had many uses over time. This richly layered pastel painting to both draw and paint with the media (with masking, fixative, water, rubbing alcohol with both brush and by hand) gives a truly tactile feel and expression to the landscape balancing freedom of expression with control.

In this self portrait, the artist reflects on people’s inner pain and the attempt to free these emotions too heavy to contain. She depicts the moment when suffering becomes visible, pouring outward from the hollow inside, rising like smoke, released through a symbolic opening of the chest - a valve of the soul. Her face blurs, but it isn’t erased - only eclipsed by what can no longer be held. In this quiet rupture, she exhales, finally able to breathe again in the space left behind by her suffering.

The sitter is depicted holding herself together in a sort of hug, seeking comfort and safety while trying not to be swallowed up by her inner void. The decontextualisation and the decision to portray her naked help highlight her vulnerability. Only a few details are in focus, while everything else dissolves into blur. The artist likes to give the viewer the illusion that the sitter is either emerging from or disappearing into a vortex of lines, which also contribute to giving movement to the composition, while making the surface uneven and richly textured. These marks are created by sanding the paper, following the dynamism the artist wants to achieve in the picture.

This painting has been taken from a larger painting of the Greek myth, “Metamorphoses d’Ovide”, by Guido Reni and a collaborator. My modern day collaborator in this scene posed in the studio and has in drawn in pencil and white Conté crayon. The myth tells a story about transformation, love, anger and punishment and my added character is simply a viewer caught up in the scene.

Study of an Amphibian 001 ~ Common Frog

Observational nature study based on a common frog skeleton (Rana temporaria). Drawing is a form of examination. It is fascinating to see the structure and consider how that forms it's movements. Such as the little hook behind the kneecap - surely an attachment to aid the jump (but apparently not!) Words: Rana temporaria. Frogs have teeth on the upper jaw but these are weak and not suitable for chewing. The coiled sticky tongue catches prey and their eyes are used to push the food down. [Framed as per Study of a Bird 004]
